The goal of this project is to create a comprehensive collection of all evidence for clothing from all Scottish cultures (Highland, Lowland, and all others) through at least AD 1700. In addition, a secondary goal is to include evidence regarding specifically Highland/Gaelic clothing from later centuries. Because Scottish Gaelic clothing was closely related to Irish Gaelic clothing through the 16th century, some references to historical Irish clothing will also be included. Currently no archealogical evidence is listed, but in future such evidence will be added.
This is an ongoing project and still in its beginning stages -- only a small fraction of the known evidence has been entered so far!
Descriptions and Depictions of Historical Scottish Clothing
A listing of the known evidence, including original and secondary source information. Includes full quotes of descriptions as presented in each source where it is found. When appropriate permission can be obtained, scanned images of depictions are also included. Depictions are also described and published sources where the depiction is reproduced
listed.
Books and Articles with Descriptions or Depictions of Historical Scottish Clothing
A listing of original as well as modern publications that quote, reproduce, or describe historical descriptions or depictions
of Scottish clothing. For each publication there is a listing of the specific descriptions or depictions referenced (and links to them).
